COST Action 621 "Groundwater management of coastal karstic aquifers" developed in the period 1997-2002. Scientists from 13 countries (Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey) participated in the management committee and working group meetings and contributed to research activities. The key objective of the action was to systematise current knowledge on functioning of coastal karstic aquifers and improve it by fusing the experiences of the participants. The action focused on the coastal karstic aquifer characteristics, the hydraulic and hydrodynamics, the application of environmental tracers, the engineering aspects of capture works and over-exploitation consequences. Research and discussion on these themes led to the proposal of new study methodologies and main rules and principles that enable rational and sustainable integrated water resources management.
