The European Soil Database is the result of a collaborative project involving all the European Union and neighbouring countries during the past 10 years. The database comprises the Soil Geographical DataBase of Europe at scale 1:1,000,00; a Soil Profile Analytical Database containing the data for many of the principal soil types found in the countries of Europe; a Pedotransfer Rules Database supplied for the estimation of variables not available directly from the geographic database; and a series of pedotransfer functions derived from the HYPRES Database. The methodology used to differentiate and name the main soil types is based on the terminology of the F.A.O. The European Soil Database provides a simplified spatial representation of the diversity and variability of the soil types found in Europe. It also provides a solid foundation for combating soil degradation in Europe and for the development of the necessary soil protection measures.
